Fahim and his family were among the thousands of Afghans who fled their home and entered the US in the summer of 2021.

Over a year later, there are still approximately 50,000 Afghan evacuees living in temporary housing on military bases here in the United States. Less than 10,000 have been resettled, and agencies are saying the remaining may not be resettled for months to come. The conditions on the bases are not ideal, and many Afghan families are struggling and frustrated. The majority of the families are under a parole status where they will have to apply for permanent residency and asylum.

While Fahim and his family are grateful to have transitioned off the base to an apartment, they still have a long way to go as they adjust to their new life in America.

Long after the news stops covering their plight, there will be a need for assistance as these families rebuild their lives and work toward a brighter future.
